Dear Parents,
We are finishing up our second unit in ELA. Next week we will have a Unit Assessment. If you would like to help your child prepare for this you can practice rhyming words with long vowel word families similar to the words we have had for spelling the past 6 weeks. Also, ask your child questions about the stories they are reading. If it is a nonfiction story, ask them to state facts they have found in the reading. If it is a fiction story, ask them the sequence of the events of the story or what is the author’s purpose for writing this story and how can they tell. We have also been working on contractions. The children have learned the punctuation mark of the apostrophe.
In Math we are at the midpoint of Module 2 . The students are working on using simple math drawings to show subtraction. This week we will use counting on and taking from ten as strategies for subtraction. Again for any help I strongly urge you to investigate the www.ojusd.org website for math help. From the home page, there is a small blue box on the right that says ENY Math help. Once you click on that box you will click on grade 1. This brings you to a screen where you will click on Module 2. From there you will click on the video for lesson of the homework assignment.
The first graders are enjoying learning about traditions and customs across the world. Today for homework, the students are asked to list their family traditions. For example, decorating the tree as a family or baking Christmas cookies.
As reinforcement and enrichment we are using a couple different websites. The login information will be going home for the students to complete as extra practice. The websites will give me information on their progress.
Just a reminder, the students should be in their Sunday best for Friday’s Christmas Concert. We will meet in the church at 6 pm. The students are to remain with the class until the end of the performance and will be dismissed by class.

Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Time spent with family is priceless.
Our Thanksgiving feast with the Kindergarten was a wonderful event of friendship. The children enjoyed themselves. Thank you to all who were able to join us.
The annual Christmas Concert is scheduled for December 13th, Students should wear their Sunday best, no sneakers or jeans. The students should be at the church by 6 p.m. and look for me on the side. They will know where after we practice in church.
The Christmas Shop is this Thursday. A shopping list form did go home already. We will have a scheduled time to shop. This is always a fun time for the students to choose gifts for their family.
I hope everyone is working on completing the Reading Incentive for November. The December Incentive will go home in a week and will not be due until after the Christmas Break. Please keep in mind that the incentive and the book report are graded homework assignments. Late assignments lose 5 points for each day they are late.
Our spelling words this week are holiday words that we will be using in our Religion lessons as well as Social Studies as we are exploring Christmas traditions around the world.

November 18, 2019
Dear Parents,
The weekly spelling test will be moved to Tuesday, November 26th due to the two noon dismissals this week. I want to make sure the students have had enough practice working with the words and the sound spellings.
The students are building their fluency with sight words and sentence reading during small group center time. We are also building our sentence writing skills. You can practice this at home by having your child write a sentence about a story they have read. We are building “strong sentences” not simple, “wimpy sentences”. We want to tell who/what, what they are doing and where or why they are doing it. The students write in their journals with a daily response to a question posted for them. This week we will be adding editing skills to our routine.
We will begin decomposing numbers in our addition sentences to make a group of 10. 9+2=? Students will decompose the 2 into 1 and 1. Then add 1 to 9 and make ten. Then they have 10+1=11. It has many steps however once we practice it the students will be able to visualize it. It can be very different for parents to help because it is quite different than the way we were taught. I am here to help guide you if need be.
The school wide Christmas Pageant is scheduled for December 13th at 7 pm. The students will report at 6:30 and dress in their Sunday Best. I will send more information as we get closer.
I am looking forward to meeting with everyone this week to discuss your children.
God Bless,
Mrs. Fiore

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween. The children enjoyed our parade and party at school. Now that we are in the month of November, the students need to be wearing the Full Dress Uniform Tuesdays through Thursdays and the Winter Gym uniform on Mondays and Fridays. If you are unsure about the uniform policy, please check the school website.
Most students are able to tie their own school shoes and sneakers, however, some students need some more practice at home. Dress shoes can also be a challenge as the laces are different then the laces in the sneakers.
The November Reading Incentive will be going home this week. Once again the students must read 200 minutes for the month. Some students read over 400 minutes for the last month. I was very proud of them. A Plot Poster Book Report is going home with the Reading Incentive. The instructions are on the paper, but if you need any more direction just let me know. At this point, the students should be reading the 200 minutes not the parent reading to the child. Not to say you should not read to your children. Reading to them is just as important as them reading to you. However, the Reading Incentive is a homework assignment to help build the child’s reading skills.
We are finishing up our first Module in Math this week. The students will be working on addition and subtraction as fact families. The students will be able to tell that 3 numbers make a family and see the connection between the addition and subtraction facts. We will also continue practicing the different ways to make the sum of 10. This should begin to be automatic for the first graders. There are songs on Youtube that we use to help us remember.
The First Graders will be celebrating Thanksgiving with our Kindergarten friends on Tuesday, November 26th. We are looking forward to learning about the Pilgrims and sharing our knowledge with the Kindergarteners.

Dear Parents,
Thank you all who attended the Scholastic Book Fair. The book donations to our classroom are appreciated. The Pete the Cat stories are a big hit.
We have been talking about how we can show love to ourselves. With Red Ribbon Week, we will be talking about eating healthy. We will be discussing the need for proteins for brain power. When packing lunches and snacks as well as breakfast and dinner, it would be helpful to point out the proteins. Taking care of our bodies with healthy food and exercise is an easy way your children show love to themselves.
The October Reading Incentive and book report are due on Friday, November 1st. These are graded homework assignments. Some of the students have mentioned that they have read more than the required 200 minutes. I am very excited to see how many minutes we have read as a class. The November Reading Incentive will go home next Monday.
Students may bring Halloween costumes in a bag marked with their names for the Halloween party on Thursday. The costume must be able to be put on overtop of the uniform. Students may not use hair dye or makeup. Also, no weapons will be allowed.
Thank you to the families that have sent in items for the Craft Fair basket.
The schedule for Parent/Teacher Conferences is all set. I am looking forward to meeting with everyone to discuss these fabulous first graders.

Dear Parents,
The Parent - Teacher Sign up Sheets will be posted outside of the classroom during tonight’s Book Fair. If you were unable to sign up for a conference time please send me an email and I will let you know what is available.
In math, we are using our number paths and adding on the find the missing part. We are writing subtraction sentences as well as the related addition sentences to match. We are working on fact families and not letting “strangers” in the house (the number bonds). The class is working on making subtraction sentences to solve math stories. The subtraction sentence needs to match the numbers given in the story.
The students have been practicing consonant blends in our reading and in our spelling words. You can help your child by having them spot blends such as- gr, st, sp, br, bl, pl in the books they are reading for their incentive or on cereal boxes and the newspaper. We are adding digraphs such as sh and th this week. We will continue to practice identifying the main character and setting as we add finding the plot. The students are enjoying using the Smartboard to practice math facts and sight words using the websites www.abcya.com and www.shepphardsoftware.com . Both of these sites are free and can be used at home as well. They have ELA and Math games.
The class had a fun time exploring the fire truck with the local fire fighters. They asked some well thought out questions.
October 14, 2019
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe we are half-way through the first quarter. The parent- teacher conferences will be here before we know it. The sign ups for conferences will be during the Book Fair on October 21, 2019. Conferences will be held November 21st and 22nd. As in the past, there will be noon dismissal these days.
There will be a Fire Prevention Assembly on Thursday. We will also be discussing fire safety in class.
We are approaching the middle of our first Math Module. We will complete a Mid Module Assessment on Wednesday. We will review on Tuesday. A math resource for homework is Duane Habecker. You can find him on YouTube. He presents examples of the math lessons at different grade levels.
We are also approaching the end of our first unit in ELA. There will be an end of unit assessment at the end of the week. The best way to help your child prepare for this assessment is to ask questions about the stories they read for the Reading Incentive. Ask your child what type of story it is and give evidence. For example, if the story is animal fantasy they should tell you what characteristics makes it animal fantasy. Pay attention to the pictures and ask questions about how the pictures match the story. They can also tell the naming part of sentences and the action part.
Please remind your child to write both their first and last names on their papers. I remind them for every assignment and I will be taking points off of graded work if the last name is missing. The class is instructed to extend the name line if they need more room. We are working on our penmanship in class. Homework needs to be written in their neatest penmanship as well.
Thank you for sending in the class dues. If you haven’t yet, please send them this week in an envelope marked to Mrs. Ott.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Carnival Day was a success. The students had a wonderful time. The class was polite and kind to all. We couldn’t have asked for a better afternoon.
Friday, October 4th is a noon dismal and First Friday Mass.
The students have been enjoying our centers each day. This gives me time to work in small groups to offer reinforcement and enrichment to the students. After analysing the MAP testing data I will have more insight on where to reinforce and enrich students learning.
We are continuing to work on short vowels during our reading skills lessons. We apply the sound spellings to our reading fluency and comprehension lessons. This week we will work more on going back to the story looking for text evidence to answer comprehension questions.
In math this week we will continue to work on our strategy of counting on to solve math problems. We will also continue to practice “What Makes 10?” facts.
Just a few uniform reminders:
boys need to wear a belt
Girls may not have nailpolish
Girls should wear simple hair accessories (black or blue hair bands and barrettes)
A Gold Strip paper goes home each Friday to tell the parents how many strips were earned and what type of week your child had. Please keep your eyes open in the folders on Fridays.
September 23, 2019
Dear Parents,
This Friday is the 8th Grade Carnival. It is a “Dress Down” day for the students. No sleeveless tops or tanks and no short shorts. Shorts should be just above the knee. Since the students will be outside weather permitting, sneakers are a good idea. There will not be pizza served on Friday. It is only the Carnival Lunch Order form that previously went home.
We are moving along with our short vowels in reading. We are working on reading simple stories and finding text evidence to answer questions. Our center work is beginning to flow nicely. The class is enjoying working with learning teams on different activities. We are working toward the learning teams working more independently.
We have begun our first Science unit on Sound. We will be exploring the vocabulary and brainstorming ways to describe sounds this week during out “Sound Lab”.
In Math, we are continuing to practice making 10. If I give a part they must tell me the partner that makes 10. You can continue this at home.
The students are enjoying using the chrome books to practice math facts, spelling and sight words as an enrichment and reinforcement time in the mornings.

Dear Parents,
We are becoming more settled in our daily routine. The class is doing a good job following the classroom rules and routines. Every student has received “gold Strips”. They work hard to be “Caught being good” to earn them.
Thank you for covering the books in clear contact paper. More will be going home this week. This process protects the books as they are taken in and out of the desks daily.
In reading this week, we will be continuing to practice our blending skills along with our dictation skills. The students will be introduced to the Five Finger Retell strategy. The students will listen to the teacher read stories and use a model of a hand as a guide to tell the character, setting and the plot of the story. We will be doing this as a class as first but the children will be working toward completing the activity independently.
In Math, we are continuing with facts to 10. We will be working on using number bond, ten frames and pictures to find the missing addend and solve story problems this week. Mastering these facts is important for their success as the Math curriculum grows this year. We will be completing “Math Sprints” as part of our lessons. The students will be asked to complete the work in a given amount of time. Last week the class was given 90 seconds to complete number bonds with different combinations to make the number 6. We have been working each day on ways to make different numbers. This week the concentration will be on the number 10. You can help by asking your child “If I have 1 how many more do I need to get to 10?” You can use different items to help visualize.
The 8th grade Carnival is September 27, 2019. The form to order tickets is available on the school website. Make sure you check it out. It is a fun tradition at St. Mary. It will be a dress down day for the students.
Please note that the summer gym uniform is the t-shirt with the school logo and the shorts with the school logo. Skorts and blue shorts are only for non gym days. Sneakers should be all white.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fiore
September 9, 2019
Dear Parents,
Thank you for coming to “Meet The Teacher Night”. It was a wonderful turn out.
This week will be our first week of homework. As I mentioned Thursday night, the spelling menu will be due on Friday. It is to be completed in the green notebooks that will go home today. I ask that you fold and attach the spelling menu in the notebook on a page before your child begins the assignments. Please initial the 3 items on the menu as they are completed. There will be math homework on Tuesday and Thursday. These assignments are due the next day. You will also be asked to cover the soft covered workbooks this week. I will send one a day home.
We will have our first spelling quiz this week. The words will go with the sound spellings of the week. There will also be a sentence dictated. The sentence will not be part of their quiz grade. It is practice for punctuation and using the spelling words in context.
I am looking forward to a great year.
