Dear Parents,

The students have completed Unit 4 in ELA. We will begin our last unit this week. The final Reading Incentive and book report went home last week and will be due on May 31st. I do have a sample of the accordion book report in the classroom if you would like to stop in after school to take a look. This week we will be concentrating on the /ow/ sound spelled ow and ou.

We will be finishing up with Unit 3 in Religion this week and will have our unit test next Monday. The Religion book will go home on Friday to review.

The End of Module 4 Math Assessment will be Wednesday of this week. The review sheets will go home on Monday for you to practice with your child. On Thursday, we will begin Module 5, Geometry, fractions and time. It is a short module.

Representatives from the Archdiocese of New York will be here on Thursday, April 27th.  All students must be in full winter uniform, no dress down passes.

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a blessed Easter. It is hard to believe we are now entering the 4th quarter of the school year.  Third Quarter Report Cards will be going home this Friday.

We are finishing up the forth unit in ELA this week. Next week we will be assessed in the lessons from the unit. The best way to review will be reading and discussing stories with your children. Ask about the characters, setting and plot or find facts in the stories. Another way to practice would be to find words with consonant blends or long vowel spellings. This week we will be working on suffixes such as -ly and -ful. We are also working on adding adjectives to our writing to add more details.

In addition to completing the ELA unit, we are completing Module 4 in math. I am planning on finishing up the Module the beginning of next week and having the End of Module Assessment Thursday, April 27th. We are working on using 2 addition sentences to solve the double digit addition problems.  We are practicing adding the tens first on some problems and the ones first on other problems.

Ex.   18+14=____        (decompose the 14 to 10 , 4)

18+10=28    28+4=32

(decompose the 14 to 2, 12)

18+2=20     20+12=32

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to chaperone our trip to the science museum.  All who volunteered are joining us. I am looking forward to a wonderful trip.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

April 3, 2017

Dear Parents,

There will be a Dress Down Day on Thursday, April 6th. There is a $2 donation. Also, food donations will be accepted April 3rd – April 6th. Nonperishable foods are being collected for the Fishkill Food Pantry. What a wonderful way to help those less fortunate.

We are finishing up the 3rd quarter this week. We are just a few lessons away from completing Module 4 in Math. We will finish up after Easter Break. A review sheet will go home after the break. In class, we are trying a new technique of Must Do, Can Do and Wow.  After the lesson, the students are assigned certain problems to complete as Must Do. Everyone must complete these. If they complete those while there is still time they move on to the Can Do and Wow if time allows and they feel confident to complete them independently. The assignment is given 10-15 to complete. This seems to be working well for the students. It takes away some of the pressure to complete the whole page. Many of the students are completing the whole page anyway to WOW the teachers.

I am looking forward to seeing all the timelines from our biography book reports. The children have been very excited to discuss who they read about and what they learned about the person. I love their enthusiasm to learn new things and be fact finding detectives. The spelling words this week will be compound words. We will be breaking the words apart and putting them back together to practice the sound spellings.

Just a reminder the field trip money and permission slip is due by Thursday, April 6th.

I wish everyone a blessed Easter.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

We are continuing our long vowel sound spellings. This week we will focus on the long I spelled ie and igh. The students will also be working on kn and wr sounds this week. As your child is reading have them look for words with these spellings. We call this being a “Word Detective”. The students are working on identifying adjectives and adding adjectives to our writing.

Students will be working with bigger numbers in Math and using different strategies to solve story problems. Students will continue to use quick tens and number bonds to solve. We will also be using tape diagrams to solve words problems.

We are working on a nutrition unit in Science. We have discussed the digestive system. This week we will be discussing the types of foods and what these foods do for our bodies. We also be discussing healthy foods vs. unhealthy foods.

Just a reminder, the Reading Incentive and Timeline are due on April 4th.

Next Monday, the students in first grade will have their annual Bunny Brunch. The room mothers will be in contact with the parents about food. This will be the students lunch for the day. It has been a great deal of fun in the past.

The field trip is set for May 24th. We will be traveling by coach bus to The Museum of Innovation and Science in Schenectady. The permission slip and information letter will be going home this week. The money will be due before Easter Break.  We have room for 20 chaperones. As was the rule with our apple picking trip, all chaperones must have completed the SAFE environment training.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,
What a crazy week we had. Since we lost three days of school thanks to the blizzard, we will be continuing with the same spelling words this week and the Math Mid Module Assessment will be today, Monday the 20th. We will continue working on the same story during our ELA lessons this week.
Just a reminder the “Under the Sea” dress down day will be Tuesday, March 21st. A donation of $2 is all your child needs to wear his/her best “under the sea” colors with jeans and sneakers.
Our end of the year field trip is tentatively set for May 24, 2017. We are traveling to the Museum of Science and Innovation in Schenectady. I am waiting on final approval from the museum. We will be taking a coach bus. At this point we will leave school by 8 am and return by 3pm. When the trip is finalized, I will send home the information letter and the permission slip. There is plenty of room for chaperones. The PPA will be donating $300 towards our trip. A huge thank you to the PPA and all of you for your hard work with the fundraisers for our school.
I am looking forward to a full week of school with your children as I missed their smiling faces this past week.
Thank you for all you do.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Fiore

March 13, 2017
Dear Parents,
We have completed our week of Cinderella stories from around the world. The students have picked their favorites and written about them. We found the theme that went through each story and discussed the similarities and differences. This week we will be reading a factual piece about Washington DC. Our long vowel spellings will be expanded to oa and ow for the long O sound.
We will have our Mid Module Assessment on Tuesday if the weather permits. If not, we will have it the next day we are in school. We will review in class on Monday and review sheets will go home with the students on Monday. The class will continue to add 2 digit numbers using number bonds and counting on. We will be decomposing numbers to add to the other number to make a ten. We will continue practicing our fast facts to help with our 2 digit addition problems.
I hope everyone has been able to find an appropriate biography for the timeline book report. If not please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I have a few in the classroom and I can help the children find a book in the school library.
Just a reminder the school is collecting money for the missions for the season of Lent.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Fiore

No New Spelling Words this week

March 6, 2017

Dear Parents,

What a wonderful time the first graders had last week for Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We read many of his stories, learned his real name and had a Seuss themed snack with our 8th grade buddies.

This week we will be reading a variety of different versions of the Fairy Tale Cinderella. The children will be comparing and contrasting these stories. At the end of the week they will choose their favorite and least favorite and write about them. Since we are concentrating on expanding our knowledge of the classic Cinderella outside of our regular reading series, there will be no new spelling words this week. The March Reading Incentive and Biography Timeline Book Report requirements went home last week.  Please let me know if you need any help choosing a book.

We are almost to the mid-way point of Module 4 in Math. The students will have the Mid Module Assessment next week. A review packet will go home on Thursday for you to review with your child. We are using the symbols to compare numbers as well as the words greater than and less than. This week we also be adding 2 digit number and tens.

As is the tradition of the school, we are collecting money for Missionary Childhood Association. The idea of giving to the mission is to help the students help share Jesus mission throughout the world .

Just a few reminders…

There is no school for students this Friday, March 10th. The teachers have a conference day.

Pizza is offered for hot lunch during Lent.

Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

What an amazing job the students did presenting their Science Fair projects. Each student did a wonderful job presenting and their classmates had fantastic questions after each presentation.  Just as a reminder the posters are to be brought back to school for the Science Fair viewing first thing Friday morning. We will set them up before mass. The parents are invited to view the projects from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

In ELA this week we will be working on the long E sound spelled ea.  We will be reading many different versions of the classic story Cinderella. We will be comparing the different versions.  In addition to Cinderella, the students will be listening to many Dr. Seuss stories. We will be celebrating his birthday this week with our 8th grade buddies.  We will read many stories and enjoy some Dr. Seuss themed treats.

In Math, we will continue exploring place value. We will use dimes and pennies to represent tens and ones. In the beginning of the week, we will talk about greater than and less than by the end of the week we will be using the symbols < > = to compare numerals.

The next Monthly Reading Incentive and Book Report will be going home this week. Just as a reminder the Reading Incentive is for 200 minutes and counts as a homework assignment for ELA.  This month the students will read a biography and create a timeline. The requirements for the timeline will be sent home with the Reading Incentive.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

We have completed Unit 3 in our Reading Streets Series. We will have our Unit 3 Assessment on Friday. We will practice our skills this week. The students will find facts in stories and find the main idea. Students will read words with different sound spellings such as long vowels, dge, contractions and consonant blends.

We are just beginning Module 4 in Math. The students will decompose two-digit numbers as tens and ones and record their findings on a place value chart. The students will use tens and ones to create number sentences to represent numbers. (30+6=36)

I am looking forward to the Science Fair Project Presentations this week. Just a reminder the projects should be picked up at the end of the day of each child’s presentations. The will be returned to school on March 3rd with the children. The parents will be invited to view the projects at 10 a.m. that day.

The next Reading Incentive will go home in March. The book report will be a time line of a biography. If you need help finding an age appropriate biography please let me know.

Here’s to a wonderful second half of first grade.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore
