No New Weekly Spelling Words

June 5, 2017

Dear Parents,

It’s so hard to believe the end of the school year is closing in on us. The first graders will be saying good bye to their 8Th grade buddies this week. The first graders will be sending off their buddies with balloons as they dismiss for the final time,

We will be completing our final ELA unit this week. The final Unit Test will be given on Thursday. The students will be applying the sound spellings we have worked on all year. There is no study guide for this, however, you can continue reading and asking comprehension questions and about the main idea of what they have read. There will be no new spelling words.

In Math, we have been working on money and will continue practicing. We will be going back to the beginning of Module 6 to work on place value of numbers greater than 40. This will be the last week of homework. The children will be decomposing numbers as tens and ones and writing them as addition sentences.         (for example 68= 60+8)

The first graders have won the Patriotic Door Contest and will be awarded a pizza lunch on Monday, June 12th. If your child does not eat pizza please make sure to send in lunch for your child. Please let me know if your child will be having or not having pizza by Friday, June 9th. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all the parents for volunteering to chaperone the field trip. It was a trip to remember.  Thank you all for your patience with the bus situation.

I have noticed some confusion with the summer uniform. The students are mixing the Summer Uniform and the Winter Uniform. If you feel it is too cool for the summer uniform and choose to send your child in pants it must follow the full Winter Uniform, ie. no sneakers or polo shirts.  The Summer Uniform is as follows:

Summer Uniform – Boys and Girls (Optional)

  – Light blue knit short sleeve shirt (with school name embroidered)

 – Navy blue walking shorts OR navy blue skort (girls only)

– Blue or black belt (required)

– Sneakers – white only

 – Socks – white only (must be ankle socks with a fold over cuff)

Thank you for your help with this matter.

This week will be our final spelling test of the year. We are working with the /aw/ sound spelling this week. The students will be reading a non fiction story about Alexander Graham Bell.

We will be working in Module 6 beginning this week.  The Module concentrates on place value as we have in previous modules. However, we are jumping to lesson 20 to make sure we can give enough time to the money section of the module. After we work on money we will go back to the beginning of the module.

It is hard to believe we are at the last few weeks of school. I have enjoyed each day with your wonderful children.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

It’s finally here! The week of the field trip. The students have been counting the days in anticipation. As I stated last week, I would like the children in one of their gym t shirts. Either one would be fine. They may wear jean or shorts (school appropriate). Students should have a bag lunch to bring. I will ask the students not bring electronics on the trip. We will have a movie on the bus for entertainment. Please make sure you arrive at the school before 8 a.m.

We are so close to the end of the year and the end of our last ELA unit.  The students are becoming very proficient in finding facts in their reading. Our reading has become more fluent as we are practicing our newest sounds and how to read to the punctuation.

The first graders have been working on map skills in Social Studies. This week they will create a map of their bedrooms. They must include a map key with symbols. The worksheet will go home on Monday.

Math Module 5 is coming to an end. We are finishing up telling time to the half hour. We will have our End of Module Assessment this week. The review sheets will go home Monday.

The students work in teams this past week and completed Saint posters. They will be hung in the classroom. I will take pictures and post them on the webpage for everyone to see. They had to work together and learn to listen to each other’s ideas. With some guidance, it was a success.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

The First Graders were fantastic at the Spring Concert!!! I am so proud of them. They have worked very hard practicing in class and with Miss Doe.

The students are finishing up Module 5 in Math. Module 5 has been a fun Module. We have worked with shapes and fractions. We are moving from fractions to telling time to the half hour. Then we will be working on Module 6. Module 6 is similar to Module 4 with larger numbers. The strategies are similar and will be familiar to the students.

In ELA, we are introducing the /oo/ sound as in foot. We will also work with subjective pronouns. The class has enjoyed listening to 3 different versions of The Little Pigs. We have picked our favorites and found similarities and differences and wrote about them.

Just a reminder our field trip is Wednesday, May 24th. The children and chaperones must be here by 8 a.m. with a bagged lunch. I am asking that the children wear their gym t shirt that day to help identify us as a group. They can wear jeans. We are looking forward to the trip.

Once again a huge thank you to the room parents and everyone who baked, sold and/or organized the bake sale. We earned over $900 for the classroom. Each year I am able to add things and make changes thanks to the money raised at the bake sales.

Thank you for all of your help and support.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

I have just been informed that the students in the class have been asked to wear red, white, blue and/or black Sunday best for the concert tomorrow night. I apologize for the short notice and any inconvenience. To help out students can wear the blue shirts from their winter uniforms. No sneakers please.                                                                                                                                                  Students should report to the First Grade classroom by 6 pm. Violin players will check in with Mrs. Fiore then will go to the computer room to meet their violin teacher. Traditionally the violin players perform first. They will come to the First Grade classroom following their performance.                                                                                                                                                                              Again, I apologize for any inconvenience of the colors to be worn for the performance.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        See you tomorrow night!!

Dear Parents,

A huge thank you to the room parents for organizing and working the bake sale. A second thank you to all the families that donated and helped!! Your support is what makes this school so wonderful.

This Friday is the Annual Spring Concert. The first graders will be singing. They are asked to wear their Sunday best, arrive at the school and meet in the classroom at 6pm. The concert will be in the gym and begin at 6:30 pm.

This week, K-2 will be taking the ITBS, Iowa Test of Basic Skills. They students took this test last year in Kindergarten. There is no studying involved. All I ask is that the students are well rested and have a nice breakfast prior to school. I will remind the students to do their personal best and “show what they know”. There will be no new spelling words this week due to the testing.

In Math this week, we will be introduced to fractions. We will explore half and quarters. We will use vocabulary such as equal parts, denominator and numerator. The student will identify shapes with equal parts as fractions.

The class is working on map skills during our Social Studies lessons. We can identify the 7 continents and are now moving onto identifying parts of the USA. Reading a map and using the directions North, South, East and West are on the agenda this week.

Just a reminder to keep working on the reading incentive and accordion book report. Also the Tech Trek sheet is due on May 10th.  Field day will be Monday, May 15th.

Progress reports will be going home to any student who is having trouble. If your child does not receive a progress report it is because there aren’t any issues. If you have any concerns please feel free to contact me and we can set up a time to discuss your concerns.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore

Dear Parents,

The Summer Uniform began today. Please remember to review the requirements that went home on Friday. Just a reminder nail polish is not to be worn to school. Please make sure your daughter has removed her polish before school on Monday.

The information for the annual field day and Tech Trek went home in the folders on Friday. Please make sure all sponsor forms are sent in to Mrs. Kramer by May 10th. There are many prize incentives for individual students. This year the class that raises the most will also be rewarded with pizza and ice cream party and extra recess. I know the first graders would LOVE to win!

We have begun our final unit in ELA. We are continuing with the /ow/ sound this week but concentrating on the ou spelling. We will also be working with pronouns. During our reading and listening, we will be finding main idea and key details to build our comprehension skills. The children are working on giving specific directions. We have written a how to on making a sandwich being careful to give specific directions. We have been listening to and reading Amelia Bedelia stories and discussing the multiple meanings of words and the need to be specific.

Math Module 5 is off to a fun start. We have been singing polygon songs and identifying different attributes of 2 dimensional shapes. This week we will be adding 3 dimensional shapes and making shape pictures. The class is enjoying the tangram puzzles.

We will complete our unit 3 test in Religion on Tuesday. The books went home over the weekend to review. We will also be reviewing on Monday.

Again if anyone needs to see a sample of the Accordion Book Report, I have a sample in the classroom. Feel free to stop by before or after school.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fiore
